This is one of the most popular studio grand pianos. It is known for its delicate, rich, full sound. The recording took place at OAL Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, and we used two types of microphones, the Neumann SM2, a stereo microphone, and a pair of Neumann U89s. The SM2 model is a stereo microphone, essentially a pair of KM56s. Introduced in 1956, it was the only stereo microphone available at the time (and for quite some time). It was used in a large number of recording situations and was called the "piano savior" by many. The SM2 is mounted above the strings, close to the hammers, to capture a delicate, bright sound that is perfect for mixes that require detail. Neumann U89 The U89 is considered the successor to the famous U87. The old model was in such high demand that Neumann decided to keep both models. The U89 is a general-purpose studio microphone, often used for pianos. For TVBO, we used a pair of U89s in x/y positions to capture more atmosphere without losing the touch with the instrument. TVBO was recorded with two different pairs of microphones. Each pair of microphones has its own characteristics. You can use them individually or blend them together using the volume adjuster. You can also turn each channel on/off using the buttons on the top.
