Roots is a series of free libraries for Kontakt intended to simplify the creative process.

Too many options, whether instruments, effects, or controls, can often slow or even halt creative minds, and it’s a problem that Westwood Instruments is keen to address.

I’m sure I’m not the only one here who pays for Netflix only to spend more time browsing than watching (am I?). The same is true in our musical lives, and as much as it’s better to have options, sometimes we need to get back to basics to get out of a creative block.

Drifting Winds is the second free Roots instrument after Untold Strings. If you missed Untold Strings the first time around, I recommend checking it out.

These instruments work in the free Kontakt Player 7.

Drifting Winds is a collection of five solo woodwinds blended into one sound cluster, which is an apt description because it’s not one uniform wall of sound; you can hear each moving part, and it sounds great.

The presets are also fantastic, ranging from somber and reflective to aggressive and other-worldly.

Drifting Winds has the slightly quirky and organic feel that I’ve come to expect from the best LABS releases – well done, Westwood Instruments!

Perhaps Roots will provide some positivity since the advent of LABS+.

Roots instruments share a few qualities: they come from experiments in sampling and sounds from previous projects and have ten adjustable controls.

In this case, Drifting Winds borrows from Westwood’s Solo Winds Untamed.

It features a set of controls that allow you to alter the character and texture of the sound without losing its core qualities or becoming overwhelming.
