Beyond the orchestral content were bellows, percussion and a characteristically bent synth section. Everything you need down to a degree or two! In what can only be described as a sonic odyssey, the Spitfire crew have travelled to the North Country to research, discover and unearth the most bare, honest and icy set of samples we have recorded to date. Back in London, we set out to record a massive orchestra – but not in a style steeped in the choral tradition of echoing angelic angels from above. Instead, we sought to create a tapestry of sound that belonged to this earth. It was as if it oozed from the moss in the ground, smelling of Estonian forests, Scottish lochs, Norwegian fjords, and standing on the permafrost and tundra of Iceland, evoking a sense of isolation. Spitfire Audio has been recording orchestras of all sizes for many years, but one theme we've been focusing on over the past decade is how to unearth and discover more naked and honest performance styles. We've also learned that it's at the quietest level where the real magic happens when it comes to sampling. With this in mind, we were inspired to create a whole new set of tools by studying the most popular recordings of Arvo Pért, Sibelius and Gorecki, and by looking at emerging talent from Scandinavia and Iceland. Working with long-time collaborator, orchestrator and contemporary composer Ben Foscott, we set out to record a full set of dynamic samples, with the highest level being MP (Mezzo Piano, or some kind of medium silence) all the way up to our quietest recordings ever. Our chief engineer opened up the hall of the Air Studios to maximize its amazing early reflections and liquefied the indications of fiber and fine texture we gave the 100-strong extraordinary London Players Band.
