Solo Chinese wind instrument with stylistic character, developed in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist guru William Arnold and proudly featuring our Microphrase Legato articulations.
Shan Bawu
The Bawu hails from southern China and sounds much more similar to a clarinet crossed with a bagpipe (if you were to play just the chanter and not the drones) than other true flutes. The Bawu is actually a reed instrument! Made from a tube of bamboo, it contains a single reed and open holes. Its characteristic performance style includes highly ornamented solo lines complete with turns, trills, and pitch bends. We've taken great care to capture the authentic playing style of this instrument.

True Legato
We recorded every note transition within an octave for 4 Legato styles: Slur, Portamento, Ornament, and Microphrases. The result is that you hear an actual performance when transitioning between connected notes.
Microphrase Legato
A special feature that adds expressive licks, mordents, and other performance-based details to your playing. These longer legato samples, recorded for every note combination, seamlessly capture the authentic character and nuance of the bawu's unique style.
Round-Robin Legato
We sampled every Legato transition 4 times. This really opens up the ability to perform organic repeating patterns and ostinatos, as each transition will trigger a unique sample variation whenever it repeats.
Modeled Vibrato
Vibrato was specifically modeled after real vibrato source-recordings. The result is universal control over vibrato speed and intensity without the limitations of pre-recorded samples.
Continuous Dynamics
No crossfading – no problem! Dynamics can seamlessly sweep between quiet and loud by controlling expression, thanks to the modeled dynamics modulators.
Adaptive Legato
Shan Bawu wields our innovative Legato feature that adjusts the speed of Legato transitions in response to your performance speed – sounding more realistic and feeling more reactive in a way not possible before.
